Hi. My name is Gary Dettloff. Welcome to my blog. I am a former IRS Attorney and Manager. Presently, I am Director of the Center for Tax & Strategic Planning in Michigan and Senior Tax Counsel at Waterford in Tennessee. I serve clients throughout the United States, and overseas from Bangkok to Cairo. This blog will offer information, ideas and perspectives about an American Tax System which can visit ruin upon upon the unprepared and those not well represented, but which can and should be held to account and made to respond with fairness, rather than undue hardship. In today’s tough economy, with a tax system badly in need of reform, it is important that we make our decisions with the best possible understanding of their effects and consequences. To that end, you are invited to check out this blog, join in the journey and share in the goal I have for every client: The Lowest Legal Tax.

As a small business owner, the tax code has become so complex, it is almost impossible to navigate the minefield that the IRS has laid down.
I am glad that there are people like Gary, who know the ins and outs of the tax code, to help us.
There’s a reason for the complexity, Raymond. You see, the tax laws start in Congress. IRS Levies, Liens, Seizures, complex attribution, credit and deduction rules all arise as a function of politics. If you research the root meaning of the word, you will find that “politics” is derived from two words: “poli” which in Latin refers to “many” or a “multitude”, and “tics” which references “blood sucking parasites”.
I am convinced that if Americans knew half of how unbelievably contradictory, complex and stullifying our tax system is, they would call Congress on the carpet, and change it immediately.
Until that happens, we will just have to continue to help one beleagured taxpayer after another to achieve fairness and reasonable results from a broken system. Thanks for checking in with my blog, Raymond. That’s why we are here. The original taxpayer advocate.
